Make Every Effort To Do This
There is something that DOES NOT happen in a Christian that is considered blindness; something that is considered to be extreme memory loss. If this "something" is NOT done, will keep you from confirming your "call and election". It is so important the Peter says to "be diligent" in this area so you do not fall. Some Bible translations use the word "stumble".
I am not entirely sure what the meaning of this word is in the original, but a little research returned the result of, "come to ruin". In James 2:2 the same word is used and is translated "fail". Whatever is most accurate, it is clear that "falling", "stumbling", "failing", or "coming to ruin" are not good. At the least it will make you unfruitful, and at the most it might prove to find that your faith is not genuine.
What is this "something"? The "something" are qualities that you must not only have, but they must be increasing. Many times in Scripture we see very stark contrasts, for example, one is either heading for glory unspeakable, or they are heading for condemnation unimaginable, there is no in between. I am not entirely sure, but 2Peter 11 seems to be one of those, although it doesn't reference the negative:
2Peter 1:11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
"In this way" is referring to the qualities that "are yours and are increasing", and we are to "make every effort to supplement" our faith. Our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior must be supplemented with:
VIRTUE, but it doesn't stop with "being good", or trying to "do better" - that VIRTUE needs to be supplemented with KNOWLEDGE, the KNOWLEDGE of God as revealed in His Word. We can, and should, expect that as we grow in VIRTUE and KNOWLEDGE that we will also grow in SELF-CONTROL. We are called to make every effort to be SELF-CONTROLLED.
As we grow in VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE, and SELF-CONTROL we must make every effort to stay the course, to be fixed in the direction, to hold fast, to be STEADFAST.
These qualities that are to be yours and increasing are to be supplemented with even more - we are to grow in GODLINESS. We know from 2Peter 1:3 that we have been granted all things that pertain to life and GODLINESS through His Divine Power. He has granted this to us, He has given us His Spirit, so we dare not say we are not able. We are to be increasing in obedience, forgiveness, mercy, and grace.
As we walk in these qualities the spill over must be brotherly affection. We are to be compassionate and generous to the brethren.
Peter wraps up this domino effect of genuine faith with "supplementing" it all with love. We know from 1Corinthians 13 that love is humble, kind, gentle, and does not insist on its own way.
2Peter 1:8-11 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Let's be diligent, then, in our practice of, and as we practice, we will grow in:
-And let us do this sacrificially without insisting on our own way, but instead, seek to do the will of God and exalt the Name of Christ.
