Every day we exercise discernment; “what route to take to get somewhere”, “is it safe to go or should I wait”, “would he be wise to buy this or not”, etc. People attempt to understand and judge correctly various things every day – usually they are “natural” things, “worldly” things.
People also consider and attempt to discern “spiritual” things. “Why this, and “why that”? Wrong conclusions and inaccurate judgments are made every day. They want to be right – they even conclude they are right, but the reality is, they have no ability to be right without having the Spirit of God.
When absolute Truth is presented, spiritual Truth, it is foolishness to them. You cannot know spiritual Truth without the “message” of the Cross – and the message of the Cross is foolishness to “natural” man. It is not that men, by nature, will say the message of the cross is “logical” or “possible” – it is foolishness to him, as foolish as saying pigs can fly.
1Corinthians 2:14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
1Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Discern: to see or understand the difference, to recognize, to judge correctly
