Mind blowing question to consider!
Do you want to be demonic?
Most people would answer that question with an emphatic, NO!
We think of demonic as acting in the most vile and wicked way possible. We think of it as hating God, hating good, and loving evil. Which is true, these things are demonic, but look at what else the Scriptures say is demonic.
James 3:14-16 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
WOW! There is so much there that we would be wise to break this down into a bitesize piece. If we do this, here is what one bite sized piece is saying:
Selfish ambition is demonic!
If this concerns us, we should endeavor to understand what SELFISH AMBITION is.
Selfish ambition should not be confused with ambition.
Ambition is a strong desire to achieve something, typically requiring hard work and determination.
Selfish ambition is to be self-seeking, always looking out for your own interests, self-centered, self-absorbed, self-important, continually seeking to elevate self, not concerned with the cares, concerns, or needs of others.
Consider this; it is not that this person simply has bad character traits, according to God’s Word, this person is demonic. WOW!
Let’s look at what Paul said:
Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Let’s put this into a very simple application:
It is not demonic to have ambition, to work hard, and have goals; but what is demonic is when you will step on, use, and abuse others to achieve those goals. The demonic will have the “by any means necessary” mindset and action. They will consider themselves more important than anyone else.
To use another simple illustration, they are not team players. They want a team member to look bad, so they look better.
Selfish ambition is easily exposed by our words. James speaks much about taming the tongue.
James 3:5-6 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
What type of words do we use that are wrapped up in selfish ambition?
When you consider this list, they are all bent toward a person tearing someone else down, and self-importance.
Help us Lord! Help us to be mindful of our words, mindful of others, mindful of our pride and self-importance. Help us recognize what is ungodly and demonic. Please grow us in the likeness of Christ, sacrificial, giving, caring, and selfless. In Jesus Name. Amen
